A downloadable game for Windows

You are BUG MAN and you must save the greenhouse plants from bees... and a television broadcast break-in? Whatever, just save the plants by blasting bees to slow them down while you push the evil TV outta here!

Controls are W-A-S-D to move and mouse button to shoot. Reload your gun at the back of the greenhouse when you run out of sprays. Gamepads should work, but they have not been tested. Linux and Mac builds (when available) have also not been tested, but should work in theory.

WARNING: The visuals in this game are kind of flashing and at times a bit much. If you have any tendency to be bothered by such things, you might want to avoid playing.

This was made for the HEXCODE SHOWDOWN JAM, using the Funky Future 8 palette. Time was definitely an issue, please forgive:

  • Lack of transitions
  • Lack of balanced mechanics
  • No background music and limited audio in general
  • Minimal level variety
  • Missing fun? Maybe some of this is in there

I started with a freaky look using the selected color palette and then wasn't sure what to do with it. So, I sort of implemented Donkey Kong 3 gameplay in first-person. If you take anything away from playing this, it should be that Donkey Kong 3 is an underappreciated vertical shooter.

OUTSIDE 3D ASSETS, MANY MODIFIED SOMEWHAT:

  • Bees
  • Oil Barrel
  • Tables
  • TV
  • Plants
  • Guy with Shades

OUTSIDE AUDIO, MOST MODIFIED:

  • Max Headroom live television break-in
  • Many sound effects from freesound.org

Very cool look to the game. The occasional sounds when the bees appeared made me feel like that the bees were a normal part of life that I had to accept.
I agree with the BagelMaster that the bullets travel too slow, and that it is near impossible to defeat a bee once it has started flying away with a plant.

Also I could not figure out how to go to a next level. Do I need to save all the plants to do that? I kept getting a Game Over screen when the time/bonus score ran out.

Thanks for playing!

To get through a level, you have to push Max's TV out the back wall by spraying him several times. The amount of shots it takes to beat him increases as the levels get higher.

I realize I glossed over the game description and saw that you had described it in there.
Thank you for telling me. I played the levels of your game and found them fun but repetitive. I stopped after beating level 20.

Oh yeah, the variety is definitely not there! Thanks for giving it another try. That is a lot of levels to make it through :)

Really cool aesthetic! I'm a big fan of seizure-inducing games. Glad you submitted!

Some things that I'd say could use improvement are the gun projectiles travelling too slow (I found it very hard to hit the bees) and the lack of new mechanics introduced in levels. I'm also not a fan of the game restarting to level 1 after losing a level, but it seems like that's part of the arcade inspiration.

My high score's level 8

The projectile speed was tricky. My original plan, where the bees attacked you, allowed for it to blast faster. I had to get rid of that because of time, and so I was stuck making it to where the particles traveled far enough... but not so far you could just stand at the reload station and win. All of this was to be fixed in the level layout phase... which didn't happen :) Thanks for playing, and for the feedback!
